On Friday 6th May 2011 Tom Harris became the first Green Party local authority Councillor in Staffordshire, by winning a seat in the Stafford Borough ward of Forebridge.
Having returned to his native Stafford, England, in 2006 after 10 years in Germany, Tom became an active member of the Green Party in Stafford and Stone, and both Media Officer and Fund Raiser for West Midlands Green Party.
Germany has played a great influence on Tom’s life, especially the ‘never again – speak up – take action’ attitude so many German campaigners and politicians have. Tom also translates and speaks German for a living.
Tom finds the Green Party is the only party in the UK which can be truly objective in its policies, as it is not dependent on maintaining the status quo in order to continue profiting from the existing economic landscape.
Tom also sees that this allows the Green Party to be the only political force offering rational solutions to not only the three major global problems we all face today: global economic meltdown, climate change and energy dependency, but also the most pressing national and regional issues, such social injustice, poverty, unemployment and transport . He believes the Green Party is the only party with a truly holistic perspective, and appreciates that their policies are for the next 50 years and not the next 5 minutes.
Tom is very keen to see electoral reform at every level of UK government, as he sees how a truly democratic system, such as the one created by the Allies in post-war Germany, can represent the majority’s view far better than the unfit-for-purpose First-Past-The-Post system the UK uses ever can, and prevent the perversions of power which are seen when it is concentrated too much in the wrong hands.
He believes that through building a strong grass-roots basis in communities the Green Party offers the people of Britain the best chance of regaining control of local, regional and national authorities from the banks and corporations and the career politicians under their spell, and steering Britain to a fairer future, where people are put before profit and it is understood that money cannot be eaten.
Tom lives in Castletown, which is lucky, as in his opinion it is the greatest part of the greatest town of all – Stafford. Learn more of his passion for his home town by watching the video below.
